The marriage of two great Families

July 25, 2009

Sr. Marie's Jubilee celebration took place on July 11, 2009 at Stonehill College in Easton, Ma. Fr. Walter Keymont said the Mass and it was con-celebrated by the president of the college. Many of Lil's nun friends from her long life as a nun were in attendance. Friends from her youth and her adult life were also there. The largest group were of course members of our large Irish family. In addition to our immediate family, many of our cousins came also. It was a tribute to a wonderful and dedicated person. How many people she has served in her ministry. We all felt enormous pride to know that one of the youngest member of our generation has accomplished so much good.

While at the Jubilee I was able to get some updates for the family trees. The most important was a set of notes that my Aunt Alice Huntley had kept of births, marriages, and deaths. Using these notes and updates from others, I have restored all the family trees for all of the descendents of both of my parents' grandparents to this website. To enter the the Main Entry to these use the link above.

I need a lot more information in order to complete this project that I inherited from my brother, Tom. Please send updates.

February 2009

Oh do the years fly by. I have not been very good in keeping the family side of the web site up to date. I've used the Team side of the site extensively but that has stopped this week as I have left coaching at Trinity. I have removed all links to the Team pages and am in the process of removing the actual pages. I will revise the team pages if I decide to coach elsewhere this year. This will most likely not happen this Spring but it is possible for next XC season in the Fall. I have coached since the 70's when our family was young. I think that, as I approached 75 years old, this year I most likely was the oldest XC and Track coach in the State. Trinity couldn't handle this fact although I was very comfortable with the fact and truly think that I am still one of the most organized and energetic coaches around.

Well, back to the family. No reunions happened since the Connor reunion of "04". Both the Connor and Connolly descendents of my generations continue to grow less in living members. Sr. Marie Agnes, (Lil) is  celebrating her Golden Jubilee as a Franciscan nun this year. She is in the process of inviting all of our generation's cousins and our siblings' children and grandchildren to the Jubilee Mass and a family reunion after the Mass. Plans are in the works. It may become the model for the new family reunions to take place in coming years. Some day a larger and more inclusive reunion may take place but it will certainly have to be organized by the younger generations. To this end I am going to try this Spring  to revise the family tree pages. I will start by reinstalling the pages of our siblings children and grandchildren (I actually even have a grandchild now with his own page and we have also been given our first great grandchild). Once I complete these I will then reinstall all the Connor and Connolly pages containing my cousins and their children. No attempt will be made to include and generations below those of my cousins' families. Hopefully I will be able to complete this project and have printouts ready on time for the celebration on July 11th.

To complete the above project I will need the help of everyone to get the family trees up to date. Please send me all the updates to the family trees that you know of and make requests to those you have addresses of. Lil could add a request for updates when she makes her contacts of those invited.

We moved back in this summer. Check out the picture page entry page for a visual experience. Just click on the previous hyperlink.

June 26, 2006

We are almost back in the house. Months of remodeling are almost done. Our kitchen is done except for appliances. We can at least cook outside on the grill when we are working here and the camping refrigerator.

July 2005

We had our reunion last year (04). We had a Connor reunion that summer and now we were looking forward to the Connolly reunion.  The Connolly reunion was supposed to take place this summer (05) but due to many reasons, it didn't. The Connor descendants are supposed to be organizing another Connor reunion for next summer (06). Guess what? The 06 reunion didn't happen either. I guess the "next" generation doesn't seem to have the organizational skills or the desire to revive them. If anyone wants to do anything for next year, let us know. If not a closer to home reunion will take place here in New Hampshire with an open invitation to all.

These reunions got going again due to the following impetus.

The following e-mail was sent out on March 28th of 2004 in an attempt to rally all the Connolly/Connor clan to an endeavor of having some type of a family reunion.  It was written by me the morning after we had the Memorial Mass for Tom, the original organizer of family reunions and the author of the initial family genealogy.

In this life all you have is a mouthful of air
When speaking of death, Keats spoke these words through an old Irish woman. We sometimes put too much emphasis on the longevity of life, rather than view it as just a small speck in the eternal life that we all will share together. In his book, Midlife Irish (a book everyone, who even wishes he/she were Irish, should read), Frank Gannon speaks in these words to reinforce  the Irish view of death this way versus how we try to hide it back in our subconscious like "a flute player who is way back in the last row and  is barely able to be heard". Yesterday another lovely young Colleen (who has 9 children and many grandchildren) told me to not count the ones who were left but to just enjoy all those who have gone before and all those who are still to come. (Betty and/or their children can share these words with Dee when the speak to her)
When speaking of his labors to create our family history through the compilations of our past, my big brother used very similar words. I've read them many times while using my very worn copy of his genealogy to compile my version of the genealogy on line. Of course, like many others, I really have never stopped to ponder what he meant. I have pondered them quite a bit over the last few weeks.
"History is the Prologue of the Future"
These words, the events of the last couple of weeks, and the reading of "Midlife Irish have all helped to reenergize me to get back to my task of completing Tom's work of compiling our genealogy. His stated objective was "to sometime  get back to the sense of belonging which we, as the descendants of the Connolly/Connor families once enjoyed". It was his hope that this be passed on to our descendants as "we all spread around the United States and even the world."
To this end I, with all of your help, will get back to my task at hand.  Notice that I said "with your help".
A second legacy that he left us to do, was to somehow revive his family reunions. My cousins sp
oke of it, my siblings spoke of it, my nephews and nieces spoke of it, and my own children spoke of it. However, we continue to be the epitome of regular Irishmen, we keep talking but there isn't any action. A friend of mine once said, "A bunch of Irishmen can talk a project to death.
The scope of a reunion takes on the same initial question that I have wrestled with when trying to plan the scope of the present genealogy. How far "out" do we go? How long in advance do we plan? We can't wait too much longer. Although Dee doesn't want me to count; Eleanor (Manning) Scanlon (now you talk about a lovely colleen) said yesterday, "There are only 11 of the Connollys left on our generation." In deference to Dee I won't count the Connors. Any suggestions? Where do we start? To spread the word, to make plans, to get things started, someone has to compile the list of people, addresses, e-mail addresses. The word has to get out. The one burning question is: How far out do we go? More suggestions? More talk!
I guess that I'm saying someone has to step up to the plate!
I plan on putting this on the web site in hopes that others within the family see it. (It is amazing how many kids from my teams of the past have seen the team section of the web site and written to me. One from 17 years ago wrote last week,)
Any of you having e-mail addresses of others in the family, can simply forward this to them and ask them to forward it to others with whom they have contact. I will be the catalyst; someone must step forward and organize!
The DadaLink etc person

Note: AS one can see from visiting the Family Reunion page some one did step up to the plate.  Actually 3 someones, Father Walter Keymont, my first cousins son, Sr. Marie Agnes (Lil), my dear baby sister, and Billy Kinahan, the close cousin with whom I spent so many of my early years.

We now look to the descendants of the Grampa and Gramma Connolly/Ryan and Grampa Ryan to step up and get next years reunion started. We learned one main thing this year.  Young Blood Needed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, our elder citizens did a great job but we all realized that we need the next generation's involvement if we were to be successful. Well, some did and many more are now energized to get a Connor 06 reunion going.

We need the computer generation of the Connolly  Clan to get involved. It is the best way to get the word around. I will continue to be the computer central for the reunion; so get me Connolly e-mail addresses. I have started putting the Connolly family trees on this website as I did for the Connor clan. However, I need the help of everyone to fill the many holes that are now on the genealogy that Tom did so many years ago. As I put your family page on line, update it as necessary.

The summary for the Connolly reunion will be found on the reunion 05 page

The entry to the family trees are found on the family tree page This is the main path to both Connolly and Ryan descendants. As work progresses, a separate path to the Ryan descendants may be included.

As noted above the Connolly/Ryan reunion did not take place. Maybe some lesser size one may still take place.

NOTE: On June 15, 04 I went to this site for the first time in many months. I originally included this just after 9-11. Much as been done with this site since those days. Take a look.

From this page you are invited to visit any of the specific pages concerning our family as given both above and below. They all are self descriptive. The Trinity link is to the Trinity High School Cross Country and Track home page. There are links from this home page to the various pages covering the activities of these teams that I coach.
